The Christian Church was organized immediately after 1858 out of the old Pleasant Grove Society. The first of several meeting places was the public school building. Later services were held in a building located on Morgan Street east of the present Conn Funeral Home. During the Civil War, this building was used as a hospital.

In 1871 the church began meeting in a house belonging to William Redmond which he fitted as a church and moved behind his business (the present Hotel Tipton). In 1888 a church was erected at the present site on Osage Avenue. This building was torn down in 1941 and a new church built on the same site. The present church was dedicated in 1944 In the 1950's a new parsonage was built and the interior of the church was redecorated and refurnished In 1958 an educational building with five class-rooms, a kitchen, and an enlargement of the fellowship hall was completed. A new organ was donated to the church by Miss Elizabeth Gilbert, in memory of the family of Charles and Hester Harriman Gilbert.

Eleven persons formed the first church. The membership of the church in 1889 was listed as 39 persons. Between these years, prior to the Civil War, the membership had been larger, but dropped during the disorganization caused by the War. Today the membership is close to 200.

Leading preachers in the early years of the church were Tennison, Davis, Embry, Rains, Laycock, Shrout, and Bolton. Rev. George Igo will celebrate his twenty-fifth year at the church in October of this year.
