Telephone service in Tipton dates back to
October 3, 1899 when the Tipton Telephone Company, Inc. was granted a franchise for a
period of 15 years. Later the name was changed to Citizens Telephone Co. In 1927 it was
sold to the United Telephone Co. At that time they boasted 500
subscribers. In 1976 United services 1,056 subscribers in the Tipton area. The present
manager is Mr. Earl David.
The first issue of The Tipton Times was
published March 1, 1877 by A. Marcy and sons. Later editors were Walt Monroe, his son
Russell Monroe, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Goddard, Everett Pizer and his son, Norris Pizer,
followed by his son-in-law and daughter, Thomas W. and Mary Jane Miller, the present
publishers.
When Everett Pizer purchased the paper in 1907
from Mrs. Goddard, the paper was published above what is now George Safire's Shoe Shop. In
the 1920's it was moved to its present location.
The linotype method of setting the type has
been replaced by modern compugraphic. The July 7, 1972 issue was the first printed by the
off-set method.
When the old equipment was sold in 1975, the
office was remodeled.
