Every age has enjoyed a different kind of dance--square dance, waltz, two-step, jitterbug, and so forth. The June 10, 1880 issue of The Tipton Times stated that the Boston Dip was no longer the most popular dance. It was being superceded that year by the Spring Glide or the Philadelphia Fling Waltz. This was considered to be a startling new dance. The editor said that this dance requires a long man, a diminutive woman and a ball room the size of a 10 acre lot. He states that it is a very cool and salubrious exercise, especially when the mercury is trying to hop out of the top of the tube.
