1892 was an exciting year for two local farmers--A.B. Alexander and Jeff Renshaw.
They were horse breeders and trainers who lived five miles northeast of Tipton. They owned a three-year old trotting mare named "Kentucky Union" and the following excerpts from Tipton Times issues of 1892 tell of some of her winnings:
Sept. 1, 1892: Messrs. A.B. Alexander and Jeff Renshaw left Tuesday morning for Independence, Iowa, to see their little mare, Kentucky Union, win the $5000 trot.
Sept.29, 1892: Tipton's gallant little mare, "Kentucky Union", won the three-year-old trotting race at St. Joseph fair last week, among competitions of world-wide reputation. The premium was $2,000. Kentucky Union's record this year has been phenomenal for already she leads Missouri
trotters and has the finest record in the world for three-year-old five heat trot. Her best time is 2: 14½ and this year she has cleared her owners, above all expenses, $5,500 and an offer of $25,000 has been refused for her. The little mare is in fine condition and there are those who think she will yet break the world's record. Tipton is proud of the part her horses and horsemen are playing in the racing circuit this year. In addition to the achievements of Kentucky Union, Mrs. F.J. Culler is racing Rustic Maid and Ham, Jr., and Larry Hazell is racing Topaz. Kentucky Union, Topaz, and Rustic Maid have all made THE LIST of racing horses this season and Tipton is proud.
