The Hen's Den was opened for business in March, 1974, by owner Linda Stinson. Mrs. Brenda Hale is employed as an operator.
The Hen's Den offers many services other than hairstyling. These include men and children's haircutting, complete facials, manicures, and a complete line of cosmetics.
The salon is open six days a week at its new location ½ block east of the Community Swimming Pool.
His 'n Hers Styling House, owned and operated by Sandra Bookout, was established in August, 1973. The shop is open Monday through Friday serving males and females of all ages. (And, according to Sandra, enjoying every minute of it.)
All forms of hair care services and styling are performed, with all types of hair care products and various retail items available.
Violet's Beauty Shop started January 1, 1965 on Howard Street. In August it moved to the present location on Osage Street between United Telephone and M.F.A. Insurance.
The owner, Mrs. Violet McNulty, is assisted by Sharon Snorgrass.
Mary's Beauty Shop opened for business March 26, 1976. Mary McCleery cuts and styles women's hair primarily, but also does men's hair. She is open five days week at 504 South Coventry Drive.
The Modern Beauty Shop is located in downtown Tipton. Sherryl Sullins opened the shop in January, 1972. She performs all duties of a cosmetologist; including ear piercing. She styles men's hair as well as women's.
The Allison Brothers Barber Shop is located in the downtown business district. It is owned by Leslie and Leonard (Hoots) Allison.
Leslie Allison took the state board barber examinations in 1934. He had a barber chair in the back part of Cotton Store and worked there three afternoons a week and in Boonville on Saturday.
In 1939 he bought the Lloyd Reynold's Shop in Tipton. At this time haircuts were 25c each. Leonard (Hoots) Allison took the state board barber examination in 1941. He joined his brother in 1944.
The Knipp Bookkeeping & Tax Service is located on Highway 5 South. It was started in May 1974 by Ralph Knipp. The firm is a general accounting office.
United Farm Agency real estate office is located on Highway 5 South. Vernon Nau started as representative in 1966. It covers Moniteau, Cooper, Morgan and Cole Counties.
David Schaffter originally had a united office in Tipton, then it was moved to California, Mo.
Dahl's Insurance and Real Estate is located in downtown Tipton. Glen Dahl began selling insurance and real estate in 1958.
Mc Daniel Realty, owned by Ralph and William McDaniel, is located on Highway 50 east of the 4-way stop. Since 1969, they have sold real estate.
MFA Insurance was organized in Columbia, Missouri and started selling insurance in January, 1946. Claude Ferguson and L.D. Schaffter were the first representatives in Tipton.
In 1949 Mr. Schaffter acquired Mr. Ferguson's agency along with Herman Haldeman's from Fortuna and the Veuleman brothers from Syracuse. Mr. Schaffter opened his office in his home and became the first full time agent in Tipton.
In 1966 Mr. Schaffter retired and Bill Moss took over the M.F.A. Insurance Agency. His office is located next to the post office on Osage Street.
Dave Brant took over Webster Thomas' insurance agency in May, 1965, selling for American Family Insurance Company of Madison, Wisconsin.
Brant Insurance Agency sells auto, fire, health and life insurance. The present location of his office is in the McDaniel Realty Building.
Schuster's Upholstery began in 1962 as a hobby after Mr. Schuster received a diploma from Upholstery Trade School correspondence course. What had started as a need to recover the family's furniture soon became a full time business. Each of his sons took their turns helping with the family business as they grew up.
Schusters offers a complete line of fabric for reupholstering furniture, cars, trucks, boats, and many other items.
Mr. and Mrs. James McCory began Shamrock Upholstery and Auto Trim in November, 1975. The business is located about two miles east of Tipton on Highway 50 by the MFA Hog Market.
They do all types of recovering, such as furniture, auto seats, and vinyl car tops.
The House of Patton Upholstery at 702 Park is owned by Francis Schollmeyer. He began in 1974.
In addition to re-upholstering chairs, etc., he refinishes furniture and builds grandfather clocks.
The Three R Furniture Service is owned by Estella Hake. The business located at 204 South Glenn Avenue was started in March, 1973.
The name comes from what Mrs. Hake does: Restores, Refinishes, and Reupholsters. Her emphasis is restoring antiques.
Tipton Bowling Lanes, now known as Country Club Bowl, was built in 1961. Tipton is unique in that it has its own bowling association which is a rarity for small bowling houses. There are approximately 250 active league bowlers. A perfect score of "300" has been recorded at Tipton once in 15 years; this feat was accomplished by Carl Backes.
Along with the newest of bowling equipment, Country Club Bowl offers many programs including: night leagues for men, night leagues for women, junior leagues, senior citizen get-togethers, bowling for stamps, red-pin free game bowling, school bowling, and open bowling. Bill and Retta Duckworth have been the owners and managers since June 1973.
The Tipton Pool Hall is located on Moniteau Street in downtown Tipton. The building and business are owned by Jim Prestage. Ernest Custer is the manager.
The Nu-Way Car Wash was built in 1967. Conrad Mowrey, Kansas City, has been the owner since that time. It is located on Highway 50, just west of the Highways 5 & 50 intersection.
The Conn Funeral Home and Ambulance Service was started in Tipton on April 24, 1950, with a partnership between Richard D. Conn Sr. and the Williams Funeral Home of California, Missouri. It is located on the corner of Morgan and Miller Streets. In 1952, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Conn Sr., bought the home and interests of the Williams family and in 1968 built a large modern chapel onto the three story brick house.
In August, 1969, Richard Conn Jr. graduated from the Louisville School of Embalming and he and his wife, the former Diana Maynard, returned to Tipton and joined the family in the operation of the business.
The first cleaning establishment in Tipton was the Platatorium owned by Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Snorgrass. Through the years while in south Tipton on Highway 50 it was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Green, Monte Brant, Frank Lang, and Jack Hoskins. Mr. Hoskins moved it to the present location of Uptown Cleaners on Moniteau Street. Mr. Madison Martin purchased the business in 1969.
Uptown Cleaners has a complete line of fabric care, including moth treatment and a complete line of cleaning from drapes to carpets.
The York Brothers Speed Queen Laundry was officially opened on December 9, 1961. The owners were
Martin, Kelly and Raymond York, sons of Mr. and Mrs. L.R. York. Martin was the manager and active member of the firm.
In Sept., 1973, Martin bought his brothers' interest in the laundry. It now has 10 dryers, 24 single load washers and four double load washers. The laundry is still being managed by Martin York, with the assistance of his wife, Mary, and Mrs. Sara Leonard helping in the evenings.
September, 1973, is the date Tipton Manor Nursing and Care Center began with a public meeting at the Tipton City Hall. At this meeting, the Colonial Manor (CM) Professional Management Corporation met with interested persons. The late Ernest Knipp is accredited with contacting CM and arranging that first meeting. A steering committee was selected to do further research on the feasibility of the idea of a nursing home in Tipton.
March 28, 1974 the first Board of Directors of Tipton Manor, Inc., was organized. Frank Gerbes was elected president. CM Corporation was retained as a consulting agency. Bonds were sold locally to finance the nursing home.
The contract for building the 60-bed structure in the west part of town went of A and D Builders of Tipton for the sum of $524,000.
Robert F. Edwards was appointed as administrator in February, 1976. The Open House of Tipton Manor was held on March 6 and 7 of 1976. At this time, Bernard Rullman was serving as the president of the Board due to the death of Frank Gerbes.
Tipton Manor Nursing and Care Center gives the elderly an environment with nursing care plus an activity program and other services such as physiotherapy.
The Hotel Tipton is the oldest business in Tipton. The first hotel building on the east corner of Moniteau Street and Osage Avenue was started in 1859 and completed sometime during the Civil War. It was then known as the City Hotel. The fire which destroyed a major portion of the business district in 1868 burned the hotel building to the ground. A new structure was built on the same site and the hotel continued operation. William Redmon was the owner.
For many years one of the operators of the hotel was Captain Hornbeck, a Confederate office in the Civil War. His nephew, Arch Edwards, owned and operated the Hotel from 1927 until his death in 1956.
The present owner is Alden Redfield. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Geiger became managers when the new owner purchased the Hotel in 1975.
George Safire's Shoe Repair Shop is located on Moniteau Street. It has been in the same location since 1937. When he first opened the shop in Tipton, it was next door where Coast-to-Coast is now.
George came from Lebanon in 1930 and joined his father, also a shoe repairman, in Eldon, Missouri. In 1931 he sold fried pies in Michigan. Since opening the shop in Tipton in 1932, he have never missed a day's work because of illness. In 1966, he returned to Lebanon with his father for a visit.
In addition to repairing shoes, he sells work and western boots for men.
Bixler Motel opened for business in June, 1955, with 12 motel units. Dan, Elizabeth and Wilson Bixler operated the motel until selling it to Thornton and Della Huff January 1, 1970. In October 1971, Raymond and Louise Dick purchased it and changed the name to Twin Pine Motel.
Presently there are 24 rentals to serve the motoring public. A meeting room is under construction.
Vincent Kammerich opened his watch repair service and jewelry store in May, 1937, after he graduated from high school. His business grew from a hobby. In addition to repairing timepieces, he sells jewelry and watches.
"Vince" has been in the same location on Highway 50 just east of the 4-way stop since he opened for business.
